Tips for Keeping a Virus-Free PC -- by Lenny Bailes
Floppy to BootPrepare an emergency floppy boot disk with copies of your PC's AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files. If possible, copy a DOS antivirus scanning utility to the disk, too. Write protect the disk and store it in a safe place.
Holy Macro, Batman!Copy all the Word templates (DOT files) you use to a backup directory and change the file extensions on the copies to elude macro viruses. If you suspect a Word macro virus is circulating, change the file attributes on your templates to read-only. You won't be able to create new macros, but your templates will be protected.
Defending Win95The Windows 95 Installation CD contains a system backup utility called ERU in its \OTHER\ MISC\ERU directory. Use it to safeguard the Windows Registry and critical Windows and DOS system files.
The Check Is in the MailPeriodically inspect mail repository files created by e-mail clients like Microsoft Exchange and Netscape Navigator. These repositories may contain infected e-mail attachments that you received and saved before installing a virus-detection package.
