While Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is currently all the rage in PC purchasing circles-hence the rise of the network computer as a potential alternative-it's increasingly becoming a serious consideration when acquiring software packages as well. This is particularly true of relatively big-ticket items such as software suites that are deployed throughout large corporations. Case in point: Microsoft Office. Microsoft's own research indicates that over a five-year period, the purchase price of an Office suite accounts for only a small percentage of the overall cost.
